    Two-Electron Effects in the Multiphoton Ionization of Magnesium with 400 nm 150 fs Pulses

    The multiphoton ionization and photoelectron spectra of magnesium were studied at laser intensities of up to 6x10^{13} Wcm^{-2} using 150 fs laser pulses of a wavelength of 400 nm. The results indicated that a variety of different ionization mechanisms played a role in both types of spectra. A theoretical model describing the processes is presented and the routes to ionization are identified. The work demonstrates the significance of the two-electron nature of the atom in interpreting the experimental results.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    Low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma: a case report and review of the literature

    Low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a distinctive variant of fibrosarcoma with a high metastasizing potential and sometimes long interval between tumour presentation and metastasis. We present the case of a 50-year-old male who developed a large mass in the posterior aspect of his lower left thigh. The tumor was excised with preservation of the neurovascular structures surrounded by the mass. The tumour measured 11 × 10 × 9 cm and on pathology evaluation was diagnosed as LGFMS. Due to the relative rarity of LGFMS, there is no dedicated protocol regarding follow-up recommendations. In order to early diagnose possible metastasis it is important to inform the patients about the longstanding metastatic potential of the disease

    'Glocal' disorder: causes, conduct and consequences of the 2008 Greek unrest

    This article examines the unrest that emanated in Athens and rolled out across Greek cities in December 2008 as a case through which to advance understanding of how local, national and international arenas may together shape localised episodes of disorder. We begin by addressing the proximate and structural causes of the unrest, before turning to explore the multifarious character of protest actions, including novel and derivative forms of contestation deployed by protestors, and public debate about the appropriate apportioning of blame amongst the variety of actors involved. Finally, we look at the diverse outcomes of the unrest and their impact upon extant socio-political tensions. For each stage of the lifecycle of the unrest, we evaluate the relevance of international actors, practices and discourses. Our analysis of the Greek unrest of 2008 suggests, first, that the array of intersections between global, national and local dimensions of unrest are more diverse than has heretofore been recognised by pertinent scholarship; and second, that international or transnational factors may play a significant role in the emergence, conduct and consequences of disorder even in instances where national and local dynamics remain predominant

    Cumulative hydropathic topology of a voltage-gated sodium channel at atomic resolution

    Voltage-gated sodium channels (NavChs) are biological pores that control the ow of sodium ions through the cell membrane. In humans, mutations in genes encoding NavChs can disrupt physiological cellular activity thus leading to a wide spectrum of diseases. Here, we present a topological connection between the functional architecture of a NavAb bacterial channel and accumulation of atomic hydropathicity around its pore. This connection is established via a scaling analysis methodology that elucidates how intrachannel hydropathic density variations translate into hydropathic dipole field configurations along the pore. Our findings suggest the existence of a non random cumulative hydropathic topology that is organized parallel to the membrane surface so that pore's stability, as well as, gating behavior are guaranteed. Given the biophysical significance of the hydropathic effect, our study seeks to provide a computational framework for studying cumulative hydropathic topological properties of NavChs and pore-forming proteins in general.     Interference effects in two-photon ATI by multiple orders high harmonics with random or locked phases

    We numerically study 2-photon processes using a set of harmonics from a Ti:Sapphire laser and in particular interference effects in the Above Threshold Ionization spectra. We compare the situation where the harmonic phases are assumed locked to the case where they have a random distribution.     Biocompatible microemulsions for improved dermal delivery of sertaconazole nitrate: Phase behavior study and microstructure influence on drug biopharamaceutical properties

    The aim of this study was development of biocompatible topical microemulsions (MEs) for incorporation and improved dermal delivery of sertaconazole nitrate (SN). For this purpose, phase behavior and microstructure of pseudo-ternary glycereth-7-caprylate/caprate (Emanon EV-E, EV)/cosurfactant/Capryol (TM) 90/water systems were investigated. Furhermore, the influence of these properties on the drug skin delivery was also assessed. Expansion of ME single-phase regions with the use of short chain alcohols was a consequence of the more fluid interface when compared to other investigated systems, which was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy-EPR. The chosen bicontinuous to inverted bicontinuous formulations were assessed against the ME based on polysorbate 80 as referent sample. Despite incorporation of SN within the selected formulations induced similar alternations in electrical conductivity, viscosity and pH values, obtained EPR spectra suggested different SN localization: within the oil phase (for most of the EV based formulations), or interacting with the interface (polysorbate 80 based formulation). Due to higher in vitro drug release (12.24%-18.53%), ex vivo SN penetration into porcine ear skin (dermal retention Enhancement Ratio (ERO) ranged from 2.66 to 4.25) and pronounced antifungal activity, the chosen MEs represent promising vehicles for dermal delivery of SN in treatment of cutaneous fungal infections. The biopharmaceutical and skin performance differences obtained with different formulations were possible to be explained on the basis of their physicochemical characteristics.This is the peer-reviewed version of the article: Pajic, N.
